Back to the Data Model
Subject: Database for Gym Management
This was the Question :-
"Dear Database Answers Ltd.
i would please like a schema for or one that will fit the following example or one
that you think i could easily adjust to fit from your site to manage and maintain a
gym membership, facilities and equipment eg e.g. weight lifting, swimming, boxing etc.
covering the branches, facilities, staff, membership, suppliers, parts and repairs.
Thanks
yours faithfully
MR A Mohammed."
Step 1 : We begin by identifying the 'Things of interest'
We can do this by talking to the people primarily involved in the business.
In this case, we have received a wriiten statement that gives us a good starting-point.
Looking at this Statement, we can define the following list of the Things of Interest (listed alphabetically) :-
1. Addresses
2. Clubs
3. Equipment
4. Facilities (eg Classes, Swimming Pool)
5. Gym Chains
6. Locations
7. Membership
8. Parts
9. Payments
10. Repairs
11. Staff
12. Suppliers
At this point, we can create the first draft of our Data Model, if we leave the relationships high-level.
This is shown on the previous page.
Step 2 : Define the Business Rules
The Business Rules establish how the Things are related and then we can draft the Data Model.
1. A Gym Chain operates a number of Clubs
2. Members join a Club
3. Members make Payments
4. Members use the Swimming Pool
5. Staff carry out Repairs
6. Suppliers deliver Goods
7. More Rules will be established.
Step 3 : Draft the Data Model
At this point, we can create a more detailed draft of our Data Model.
Step 4 : Review the Data Model with Subect Matter Experts (SMEs)
Now we can discuss the Model with SMEs and modify it as required to obtain SME Sign-Off.
